The Supreme Court of Cassation has also handed down a final life sentence for Fulvio Baule, the 44-year-old bricklayer from Ploaghe, who was already convicted in the first and second instance by the Sassari Assize Court for the double murder of his in-laws, Basilio Saladdino and Liliana Mancusa, and the attempted murder of his ex-wife, Ilaria Saladdino, which occurred in Porto Torres on February 26, 2022.
The Court declared inadmissible the appeal filed by defense attorney Nicola Lucchi, who argued there was "an erroneous application of the legal provisions regarding mitigating circumstances, with overlapping assessments of the positive elements of the defendant's conduct and his mental state." The Attorney General had requested the appeal be dismissed, a request granted by the judge, who upheld the verdict issued by the Court of Assizes of Appeal on March 31, which rejected Baule's lawyer's request for a new expert assessment.
Also present in the courtroom were the lawyers for the civil parties, Silvia Ferraris, Antonio Pietro Sanna, and Gabriele Satta. The double homicide occurred on the evening of February 26, four years ago, when the bricklayer from Ploaghe took his children back to his wife, Ilaria Saladdino, who had moved to Porto Torres, to her parents' home on Via Principessa Giovanna. The woman was attacked in the street following a furious argument, then the confessed bricklayer took an axe from the trunk of his car and struck his father-in-law, Basilio, several times.
He later chased his mother-in-law, Liliana, who was savagely attacked and died after a month in a coma. He also attacked his ex-wife with the same weapon before turning himself in to the police.
