Officials from the Customs and Monopolies Agency of Sassari , on duty at the Riviera del Corallo airport in Alghero , in tandem with the Guardia di Finanza soldiers of the Alghero Company , stopped and subjected to a check a passenger arriving from Nigeria, via Roma Fiumicino , who was carrying in his luggage several bags containing over eight kg of unidentifiable seeds, without labels certifying their origin and species.

For this reason, the seeds were subjected to administrative precautionary seizure, pending the hygienic-sanitary analyses of the phytopathologist appointed by the Regional Department of Agriculture.

"The danger - the investigators explain - deriving from the introduction of unknown seeds into the national territory, in fact, comes from the fact that these could contain harmful organisms, to be subjected to quarantine before being introduced and moved into the territory of the European Union . Furthermore, they could be used for reproduction in local soils, with the risk of contaminating native crops, with serious economic, social and environmental impact on the territory".
