A civic-minded citizen's tip-off and the immediate intervention of the Carabinieri prevented the worst. It happened overnight in Iglesias , where a passerby, traveling along State Road 130, was attracted by several muffled yelps breaking the silence of the area. Noticing the presence of a Carabinieri patrol car patrolling the area, the man decided to stop to explain what he had heard to the officers, specifying the exact location of the noises.
The officers then began a careful search of the undergrowth along the roadside, making their way through the brambles, guided by the yelps. Then they made their discovery: inside a sack, left out of sight of passersby, were three Maremma Sheepdog puppies . Although cold and visibly frightened, the animals were fortunately found to be in good health.
After initial treatment at the Carabinieri station, the puppies were entrusted to veterinarians at the Cagliari Local Health Authority (ASL), who will monitor their health and initiate the adoption process.
The military have instead started investigations aimed at identifying the person responsible for the abandonment.
