Ictus, the Stroke Unit of Cagliari awarded for excellence in rescue
For the third year in a row Arnas Brotzu has received the prestigious “Angels Gold Status”A sudden loss of strength in the arm, a mouth that twists, words that don't come out as they should. Subtle but unmistakable signs of an ischemic stroke, one of the main causes of death and permanent disability in Italy. In Sardinia, a wonderful but logistically challenging island, time is the real enemy : intervening quickly can be the difference between life and disability.
Responding to this challenge is the Stroke Unit of the ARNAS Brotzu of Cagliari , which for the third consecutive year has received the prestigious international award “ Angels Gold Status ” from the European Stroke Organization . An award that celebrates the efficiency of rescue operations, the result of a synergy between the hospital and the territorial emergency system, coordinated by 118 of Cagliari.
In 2023, over 200 patients were treated with mechanical thrombectomy thanks to the collaboration between the Stroke Unit and the Interventional Neuroradiology department. "These numbers confirm the effectiveness of centralization in the two regional hubs, Cagliari and Sassari, and the use of helicopter rescue to reduce intervention times," explains Jessica Moller, regional manager of the Italian Stroke Association.
The role of 118 is fundamental to intercept the symptoms in good time. "When you recognize a sign of a stroke, you must call 118 immediately. Every minute is precious for the brain", underlines Daniele Barillari , director of the 118 Central of Cagliari . Furthermore, the recent introduction of a telemedicine technology even allows you to make an initial diagnosis via video call with a specialist before arriving at the hospital.
Between May and November 2023, 118 coordinated the transport of 250 stroke patients, and estimates for the year exceed 450. But for Giovanni Cossu , director of the Stroke Unit of ARNAS Brotzu , we must not stop there: «Only an efficient network and an aware population can guarantee all Sardinian citizens the same treatment opportunities, regardless of distance».
