A devastating fire , difficult to control, that broke out yesterday in Guasila and which also spread to Guamaggiore during the night . The flames also came dangerously close to the Service Center of the archaeological area of Barru.
«The fire – explained the mayor of Guamaggiore Nello Cappai – was stopped shortly before, also thanks to our timely alarm. We tried to save what could be saved. The Fire Brigade, the Forestry Service, the Civil Protection, a Canadair and some helicopters intervened. The contribution of the volunteers is also invaluable."
Yesterday at 6pm the flames broke out in the Guasila area: «Very high and vast tongues of fire, which quickly reached our territory. In just a few hours, 500 hectares of land went to ashes, transformed into an infernal black spot . Wheat fields, fodder and olive trees were destroyed. Pines, oaks and tall trees were also incinerated", continues the mayor, speaking of "incalculable" damage .
The affected areas are those of Riu Sa Folla, Is Baccus, Ruienna, Guttinigaddi and Barru.
Cappai again: «We spent a complicated night together with the urgency of safeguarding the territory and the service center. This morning around 5.30 the flames were about to start again. I immediately notified the firefighters who were already on alert anyway. I therefore thank all the forces involved in the very difficult extinguishing work. Now let's count the damage: after the drought, even the fires, a territory on its knees ."
