Cigarette butts or handkerchiefs: fine up to €1,188. Cans or glass bottles: €1,500 to €18,000. The same fine (plus possible arrest) applies to "non-hazardous waste in protected areas, near rivers, or polluted areas." To be fined, you no longer need to be caught in the act: since August 9th, a decree (number 116) has been in effect, cracking down on throwing waste from cars (campers, trucks), whether they are moving or parked.

To catch uncivilized garbage dumpers (there are many in Sardinia, just look along the roads), law enforcement or supervisory authorities will only need a clear snapshot of the vehicle's license plate, captured by municipal or private cameras. Penalties include license suspension.
Article 15 of the Highway Code has been amended: once the frame has been acquired, the vehicle's owner can be traced via the Motor Vehicle Department database, and the fine is notified to the driver's home.
