The first heart harvest with the "stopped heart" procedure performed in Sardinia was completed in the AOU clinics in Sassari. The operation was performed between November 12 and 13 in the operating rooms on the fourth floor of the Santissima Annunziata, thanks to the wishes expressed in life by a 59-year-old patient who died in the Civile Resuscitation Unit. At the same time, the liver and cornea harvests were also performed. The heart and liver were transplanted on the peninsula, the corneas went to the Eye Bank in Mestre .

This is the second multi-organ donation from a non-heartbeat performed in Sassari in a month. Previously, on October 12, kidneys, liver and corneas were taken from a 65-year-old man, who also died in intensive care . "This result is the fruit of the commitment and extraordinary professionalism of our teams, who work in perfect synergy to guarantee a safe and respectful donation," comments Antonio Lorenzo Spano, general director of the AOU. "A heartfelt thank you goes to the donor and his family for this gesture of extraordinary generosity."

" The exceptional nature of the operation, which has a very high human impact, consisted in being able to remove, in addition to the liver, also the heart after the 20 minutes of flat electrocardiogram required by law ," explains Paola Murgia, local transplant coordinator and head of the Hospital Procurement Coordination of the University Hospital Trust. "After the arrest, once perfused with the Ecmo, the heart resumed contractile activity, demonstrating that it was in optimal conditions for transplantation. The complex procedure saw multiple medical teams working in the operating room to perfuse the organs, remove them and then perform the transplant."
