Tense moments unfolded last night along State Road 554, where a chase ended violently near Via Newton. A 33-year-old man, a resident of Sinnai, was reported by the Carabinieri for resisting a public officer and driving under the influence.

It all started around 1:00 a.m., when a patrol from the Selargius station, with the support of the NORM radiomobile section of the Quartu company, noticed a Volkswagen Beetle proceeding erratically at the intersection of 554 and Via Roma.

Upon seeing the officers, the driver suddenly accelerated, attempting to escape and initiating a chase through the city streets . The escape lasted only a few minutes. The car, speeding, crashed into a tree on Via Newton. Despite the impact, the driver attempted to flee on foot, but was immediately caught and stopped by the officers. During the arrest, one of the officers suffered a minor injury to a finger on his left hand, requiring medical attention.

When subjected to a breathalyzer test, the 33-year-old tested positive with a blood alcohol level of 1.31 grams per liter, more than double the legal limit.

His license was immediately revoked, while the car—which was also found to be uninsured—was seized and placed in an authorized depot pending confiscation.
