This morning, the trial for the murder of Arzachena goldsmith Giovanni Fresi opened in Sassari before the judges of the Court of Assizes of Appeal.
The crime dates back to the end of December 2023; the victim was struck repeatedly on the head with a large wooden stick. The goldsmith's son, Michele Fresi, is accused. This morning, the Attorney General's Office asked the judges to uphold the life sentence handed down in the first instance . Therefore, according to the prosecutor, there are no new reasons or arguments that could change the decision of the Sassari Assize Court.
After prosecutor Paola Pischedda spoke, the defense reiterated the arguments central to the first-instance trial. Michele Fresi's defense attorney raised the issue of sentencing, in light of what emerged during the first-instance trial, particularly the background of the young Arzachena man accused of his father's murder.
The civil parties agreed with the prosecutor's conclusions. Attorney Jacopo Merlini appeared on behalf of two Carabinieri officers who were shot during Fresi's arrest. No preliminary investigation will be conducted during the second-degree trial; the full picture of the case is clear.
After taking a massive amount of narcotics, Michele Fresi struck a friend on the night between December 27 and 28, 2023, causing her to fracture her jaw. He then struck her with a baton, fatally injuring his father, Giovanni. Subsequently, during the arrest, Michele Fresi struck two officers who were restraining him, nearly losing one of the officers' eyes. The trial before the Court of Assizes of Appeal will resume on December 14. Replies from the parties are expected, and a verdict could be reached on that date.
