He tried to hang himself in front of the police, but the soldiers broke down the gate using the service car as a battering ram and saved his life.
The tragedy was averted in a town in the eastern province of Cagliari.
The alarm was raised with a call to 112, reporting a young man's suicidal intent. Officers patrolling the area rushed to the scene. From the street, they saw the desperate man sitting on a chair in a courtyard, tying a rope attached to a roof around his neck.
At the sight of them, he kicked out, leaving himself dangling in the air. The decision was made in a matter of moments. The gate was barred, the wall too high: the time to climb over it could have proved fatal. So the soldiers used their car as a battering ram, crossed the barrier , and were able to administer first aid to the man, who was already unconscious.
118 emergency medical personnel then responded to the scene, having been pre-alerted by the operations center that coordinated the operation. The young man was rushed to the Santissima Trinità hospital in Cagliari, where he remains hospitalized. Fortunately, he is out of danger.
