"Having concluded the discussion and in-depth analysis of the Eni-Versalis Industrial Transformation Plan and the prospects for the chemical sector, in light of the in-depth analyses carried out, the conditions are now in place to proceed with the activation of the Control Room provided for by the Green Chemistry Protocol ."

This is the response from MIMIT, the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy , to the legal formal notice signed by the Sassari regional and territorial CGIL, sent via certified email on July 15 to the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the competent Ministry. This initial response could lead to a breakthrough, after more than ten years of battles waged by all trade unions, social partners, TIPS (Italian Trade Unions), and regional and local institutions, to launch the industrial reconversion project, signed at Palazzo Chigi on May 26, 2011, and stalled for too long.

The Ministry's announcement comes from the Ministry, which, it assures, "will promptly initiate the necessary discussions and organizational formalities aimed at convening the steering committee, in agreement with the relevant administrations and entities." The goal is to ensure work begins by September, when all parties involved, including Eni, will meet in Rome to review the program agreement and determine whether the multinational intends to complete the further phases of the green chemistry project. Rome has also reassured the Ministry of Economic Development of the Porto Torres industrial hub and, more generally, the prospects for the national chemical industry.

This context also includes the discussion, deemed by the Ministry "necessary as a precaution, given the importance of industrial relations" , on the latest Eni Versalis Industrial Transformation Plan and the definition of the Protocol signed at the Ministry's headquarters on 10 March 2025. These steps were taken by Eni but were not welcomed by the CGIL, CISL and UIL unions, due to the exclusion of the Porto Torres site from the multinational's investments.

The Ministry has chosen to take time to define a comprehensive framework for the evolution of the national chemical sector, "a prerequisite," the Ministry specifies in its response to the CGIL , "to subsequently address more effectively the problems of the industrial sites affected by the reconversion processes, including the Porto Torres site."

"The formal notice and request for access to documents, sent on July 15, have yielded initial results," said Massimiliano Muretti, CGIL General Secretary of the Sassari Chamber of Labor . "We hope," he added, "that this commitment will be honored, that MIMIT will be consistent, and that the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the recipient of the formal notice, will ensure that the commitments made today by MIMIT are honored." For Muretti, "what appears clear is that the formal notice sent by the CGIL, with its request for formal compliance with a law, has made the political will explicit. It is also clear that perseverance and consistency are needed in these matters: laws and commitments must be respected, and we will do everything possible to ensure this happens."
