Chickens on holiday on the island of Figarolo are the new guests of the islet in the middle of the sea of Golfo Aranci, a special protection area where it is forbidden to introduce any non-native and invasive animal species.
The scene was immortalized by the Maremosso citizens' committee, committed to safeguarding the local environment, who found themselves faced with a group of birds being petted by amused tourists.
«Protected animal species live on the island of Figarolo and contact with backyard chickens is a time bomb: we think they should be removed as soon as possible», says Maremosso. And he adds: «We turn to those who abandoned them and to the competent institutions and if there is no quick intervention, we will take care of transporting them to a suitable shelter or to a chicken coop recognized by the ASL».
