Little Giulia was due to be born on September 10th . But she "couldn't wait to see the world", so she said her first goodbye to her mother Martina a good five days earlier, aboard an ambulance that traveled the miles from Nurri that separated them both from the birthing center of the Santissima Trinità in Cagliari.
"My daughter was pregnant for the second time," says grandmother Cristina Damu , "and when she didn't feel well on the evening of the 4th, she wasn't afraid. She was convinced she could hold out, that everything was OK." So everyone went to bed "peacefully." But their sleep was soon interrupted by a phone call: "'Mom, we're going to the hospital, I can't wait any longer,' my daughter told me on the phone. It was a quarter to five in the morning. So I quickly got dressed and started driving. She and her partner were in the car with their mother-in-law, me in tow." But at a certain point the situation became more critical and they had to call an ambulance in Senorbì. "I thought we would meet at the Santissima Trinità but when I arrived there was no one there," continues Mrs. Damu. "I was very nervous, then I received a call from a number I didn't know and I realized that something had happened."
On the other end of the line was her daughter Martina, her voice broken by emotion: “Mom, she was born! She was born on the ambulance stretcher!” she said to me in tears. That’s how I found out what had happened: Martina gave birth near the Mulinu Becciu area, with the ambulance moving. Luck wanted there to be a doctor on board, it doesn’t always happen. It was a gift from heaven ,” confesses grandmother Cristina. “ My granddaughter and daughter were taken care of by wonderful angels who did their job with great humanity. I want to publicly thank the doctor Marco Porfirio di Bella , the nurse Simone Gattolin , the driver/rescuer Cicci Mura . Great angels who deserve all my respect. Thank you very much,” concludes grandmother Cristina.
