The more than three hundred kilos of fish seized during a complex operation against illegal fishing in recent days by the staff of the maritime directorate of northern Sardinia will be donated to charity.
The staff of the animal origin food hygiene service of the ASL Gallura ensured that the easily deteriorating fish was not destroyed but was sent to the neediest. The three hundred kilos of fish product were seized along with numerous fishing gear including 280 metres of net that did not comply or was used in violation of national and international regulations for the protection of fish resources and the environment. In addition, administrative fines of over eight thousand euros were imposed.
The maritime police operations involved the use of air and naval means of the Coast Guard in the areas of the four marine protected areas of northern Sardinia and the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park. During the checks, a sailing vessel was also fined because it was near a large oil slick that had illegally dumped waste into the sea.
