The fish, some of which was untraceable, was stored in substandard freezers. For this reason, officers from the Cagliari Coast Guard's fishing control center fined the owner of a restaurant in Sulcis and seized his equipment and part of the merchandise.

The Coast Guard carried out checks between Cagliari and Sulcis-Iglesiente over the weekend.

The most serious situation, it was reported, was found in a restaurant in Sulcis, where the presence of " two quintals of fish and other food products , intended for serving, was discovered in five freezer wells (three inside the restaurant and two in the courtyard) without any health authorization and not included in the restaurant's self-monitoring manual."

The owner was fined seven thousand euros "for failing to notify the health authority of the presence of refrigerated wells, for failing to update the procedures set out in the company's self-monitoring manual , specifically regarding the failure to measure and record the operating temperatures of refrigerators and freezers, and for failing to trace the stored fish products."

In addition to the five illegal wells, 2 quintals of food products were seized, including 20 kilos of untraceable fish products.

A restaurant owner on the Cagliari coast also faced trouble: "In particular, discrepancies were found between the geographical origin indicated on the menu and the actual origin of the product. Furthermore, the menu did not specify the frozen nature of the product served, thus misleading consumers regarding the quality of the products." The result: an €8,000 fine and an order to correct the menu.

Finally, a fishmonger's shop inside a shopping center in the Iglesiente area discovered a batch of red shrimp sold without any indication of the presence of sulfites. The resulting fine was €6,000.
