From the most prolific in Italy, by far, to the region that has the fewest children. All in 70 years. Sardinia's demographic collapse is well known. Its entity emerges from the new data analysis system made available by Istat yesterday, which allows you to compare the parameters with a quick click.
The main indicator of the database is the fertility rate, i.e. the ratio between live births and women of childbearing age, which according to the statistical institute ranges from 15 to 49 years. You can travel in time, back to 1952. And the comparison between eras is merciless.
In the years of the economic boom in Sardinia, more than three children were born for every woman. The ratio was 3.80 in '52, 3.74 the following year, with a new increase to 3.78 in '54. That decade the island always topped the birth rate charts. The average age of the mothers was less than 30 years.
To reverse the ranking, we arrive at 2022: the estimated figure for the island is 0.95 children - not even one - for each woman. Negative record, with a reduction also compared to the previous year, when the ratio was at 0.99.
