When she was found, her face was deformed and her body was reduced to a skeleton . But her eyes already showed it all: the sweetness and strength of a soul capable of winning the hearts of thousands. Her name is Palla, and today she is a pit bull, a symbol of rebirth, known on social media and the face of the nonprofit organization founded from her extraordinary story. After ten years of love, care, and shared struggles at the Duemari clinic in Oristano , however, news has arrived that no one would have wanted to hear.
"My, our, little Palla has been seriously ill for months, and we've risked losing her several times in recent weeks, both from the illness and from the effects of the medications needed to treat her. I won't hide from you that the situation is very serious, and we miss every day that sees us together again." These are the words of Monica Pais, founder of the Duemari veterinary clinic and the Effetto Palla Onlus association , who shared a long and touching reflection on social media. It's a message shared with the community that over the years has rallied around her, Palla, and the many animals rescued by the clinic, helping to build a network of solidarity, awareness, and concern for the world of stray animals.
Unsure how much time she still had left to spend with her "little girl," the veterinarian chose to cast her mind back to the day their eyes met for the first time. "She, a young female impossible to associate with any breed, so deformed was she, looked like a hideous cartoon: a huge head, the size of a ball, attached to a skeletal body by a neck almost entirely severed by a noose that had penetrated all the way to her cervical vertebrae, slowly strangling her and almost cutting off her head. That's why they named her Palla, and they couldn't have known what this wonderful, magical dog would unleash."
From that story of suffering and rebirth, Effetto Palla Onlus was also born. "Ten years after her discovery, her nonprofit organization, through a dedicated donation tied to the purchase of a rehabilitation tank, adds another enormous piece to the puzzle of caring for no one's animals," Pais recalls. Then comes the reassurance: "Anyone who has met her knows what a force of nature she is. We are doing everything we can to make her feel loved, protected, and pain-free during this difficult journey. Invaluable colleagues are supporting us, and Palla is undoubtedly the former stray who now enjoys the best veterinary care available in Italy and the world." "We don't know how long we'll be able to live together," Pais concludes, "but our remaining time will be lived intensely, as if it were never ending. Please don't ask too many questions and love us even more, if possible, during this time. And please forgive us if we fail to be brilliant. We have small hearts and we try to enjoy every little improvement, every sign that distances us from the idea of losing her ."
