Cagliari mourns the passing of Mario Marchetti, 86, former deputy prosecutor of the Cagliari Public Prosecutor's Office, a key figure in the Sardinian judiciary and a man who left an indelible mark on the fight against organized crime and the protection of public administration.

His career has been a journey of excellence and dedication. Having graduated at a young age in Sassari, at just 22 he was teaching literature in Bonorva and Macomer, before joining the Cagliari Police Headquarters in 1966 as deputy commissioner.

With a cigarette always lit and a determined personality, no one could have imagined that that young policeman would lead the main pools of the Cagliari Prosecutor's Office decades later .

After successfully passing the competitive exam for the judiciary, Marchetti became head of the Cagliari pool and, for years, coordinated the District Anti-Mafia Directorate .

It was he who led the investigations and trials that led to the dismantling of the Banda de Is Mirrionis in the 1990s , one of the most notorious and complex chapters in the city's criminal history. Subsequently, with his appointment as deputy prosecutor, he moved on to coordinating crimes against public administration, tackling sensitive cases with the same determination and rigor that had distinguished him throughout his life.

His life wasn't limited to the courts. Until October 6th, Marchetti also served as president of the Cagliari Opera House Foundation, appointed by Mayor Massimo Zedda. A role he himself described as "complex," one he approached with commitment and discretion: "It was a difficult journey," he stated, elegantly closing a chapter of his civic life.
