The investigation into fraud and extortion targeting elderly people using the "fake Carabiniere" technique in the Oristano area , between Nureci and Samugheo , is widening. The incidents date back to December 15th. Following the first raid in Alghero in recent weeks, which led to the arrest of a 37-year-old man from Campania , this morning the Carabinieri also arrested the second alleged accomplice, tracked down in Aversa, in the province of Caserta.
The operation, coordinated by the Oristano Public Prosecutor's Office, is the result of a long and detailed investigation conducted by the Ghilarza Carabinieri Company with the support of the Nuoro Provincial Command and the Alghero and Aversa Companies. Investigators reconstructed the duo's movements by analyzing numerous video surveillance systems and by identifying, through a rental company, the car they used for travel around the island.
The incident involved an attempted extortion in Nureci , where Carabinieri officers from the Senis station intervened at the home of an elderly woman. She had been contacted by phone by a fictitious Carabinieri officer who told her of a serious car accident in which her sister had been involved, resulting in the collision of a pregnant woman. To avoid criminal prosecution, the victim was asked to prepare €16,000 in cash to hand over to an accomplice. However, the extortion attempt failed thanks to the timely intervention of a patrol of real Carabinieri officers, who forced the criminals to flee.
In Samugheo, however, the scam was successful , again using the same ruse. In that case, an elderly man had been convinced he needed to be searched because he was involved in an alleged robbery in the Sassari area. Under the pretext of comparing assets, the victim had handed over gold jewelry and cash worth approximately 12,000 euros to an unknown man, who then disappeared.
Thanks to the victims' timely reports, investigations were initiated, which then led to the identification of the alleged perpetrators. At the request of the Public Prosecutor, the Court – Office of the The investigating judge issued a precautionary custody order for both suspects.
