A day of mourning has been declared in two municipalities for Saturday, the day of the funeral of Francesca Deidda , the 42-year-old killed last May by her husband Igor Sollai.

The funeral will be held on January 11 at 10 am in the oratory near the parish of San Sebastiano, in Piazza Padre Pio in Elmas, the woman's hometown . The location was chosen "to allow the widest participation" in a sad event awaited by the family who want to give a worthy burial to their Francesca.

The municipalities of Elmas and San Sperate (where the murder took place, in the house that Deidda shared with her husband Igor Sollai) have declared a day of mourning, expressing "their closeness to the victim's family and loved ones" and " sharing the pain and indignation that this event has caused among our fellow citizens and throughout the region ."

Several mayors of the metropolitan area of Cagliari and representatives of regional institutions will participate in the funeral, because "all together we want to reiterate the firm condemnation of all forms of gender violence, a phenomenon that represents an open wound for many communities and for the whole of Sardinian society ".

"Francesca's memory - the Municipalities underline - must be a warning and a stimulus to continue working, together, to build a more just, respectful and safe society for everyone ."

Flags will be flown at half-mast in all public buildings and schools of all levels. Shopkeepers, entrepreneurs and self-employed workers are invited to suspend their activities during the ceremony, "as a gesture of participation in the collective grief". All citizens are also invited to observe "a minute of silence and reflection at 10:00, in conjunction with the start of the ceremony" .

In the last few days, the return of the body was ordered, after the official autopsy report was filed, which confirmed the manner of the crime: Francesca was killed with hammer blows on the sofa in her home, she tried to defend herself .

For Igor Sollai , arrested on July 3rd and a self-confessed offender, an immediate trial has been ordered. A special procedure that does not include a preliminary hearing, with no rewards for the accused. The trial will be held on February 26th .
