The Ep Fiume Santo thermoelectric power plant , in the North West of Sardinia, is being converted to gas . The news emerged during the meeting in Cagliari between the Industry Councillor, Emanuele Cani, and the trade unions Cgil, Cisl and Uil, during which he communicated the Region's decision to send the government and the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the proposal which foresees that the medium-sized Fsru, or the LNG storage and regasification unit inside the industrial port of Porto Torres, will power the Fiume Santo power plant in addition to the industrial and civil users of the Metropolitan City of Sassari.
«The Government sent the draft text of the Prime Ministerial Decree to the Region about ten days ago, which, once updated with the proposed amendments from the Region itself, could be approved next week» , explains Pierluigi Loi, general secretary of Uiltec Sardegna.
The reconversion that will have to be confirmed by the company Ep Produzione, through the planned investment of one billion euros with the Fiume Santo Energy Park project, aims to transform the plant into a green energy hub, a mix of gas, hydrogen, photovoltaic panels and batteries.
The closure schedule for still operating coal plants such as Fiume Santo, initially scheduled for 2025, should be postponed to 2030-2032.
