The fire that broke out shortly after midnight on the terrace above the Intensive Short Observation Unit (OBI) next to the Emergency Room at the Brotzu Hospital in Cagliari, opposite the Hand Surgery department, did not cause any injuries.

The hospital management made this clear in a statement released this afternoon. Alerted by staff on duty, the hospital's internal emergency response teams (GSA) responded within minutes and extinguished the flames before the firefighters arrived , who nevertheless responded. Due to the smoke, it was necessary to evacuate, as a precaution, twenty patients hospitalized in the Hand Surgery Unit, the three present in the Obi area, and those undergoing treatment and waiting in the Emergency Room.

"Everyone was secured," Brotzu Hospital specifies, "and constantly assisted by the staff on duty." The crisis situation, which was resolved within about an hour and a half, was immediately reported to 118 and other city hospitals, particularly the University Hospital and the Santissima Trinità, to ensure coordination of the emergency network.

The emergency room was reopened (but not the OBI ward) shortly thereafter, and the patients in the hand surgery ward were able to return to the department. Regarding the incident, Alessandro Sorgia, regional councilor for the Italian Federation of Workers' Unions (FdI), has submitted an urgent question to the president of the regional council and health councilor, Alessandra Todde, in reference to a complaint filed this morning by the USB Sanità union , according to which the fire alarm systems had failed to function. "An extraordinary inspection is essential," states the minority representative. "The safety of those working to save lives and those hospitalized for treatment is non-negotiable."
