Fighting fires in Sardinia in six steps, a proposal relaunched this morning in Cagliari at a meeting promoted by the National Network "Basta Fires ."

A reforestation plan with native species in all areas affected by the fires ; the hiring of a sufficient number of workers for reforestation, maintenance, and prevention activities ; a contract with a helicopter company to be used year-round for transporting personnel to reforestation sites, spraying water, and filling reservoirs in the reforestation areas; the assignment of aerial surveillance and firefighting services to public companies with public personnel ; training and environmental education courses from kindergarten to university ; and, finally, the implementation of a monitoring system with cutting-edge technology combined with meteorological stations.

"There are several advantages," explains Locci, the Sardinian representative for the White Network. "First, the reduction of CO2 production, the increase in its absorption capacity, the restoration of water sources, and the protection from hydrogeological instability."

In 2025 alone , nearly 3,800 hectares of woods and forests went up in smoke in Sardinia, the equivalent of around 5,000 football fields : "We are among the hardest-hit regions, with as many as 40 fires a day from north to south of the island."

And this proposal, Locci explains, could prevent a new Punta Molentis incident, the jewel of a beach destroyed by flames last summer. Prevention is crucial : "After every fire, we only hear about aircraft, Candairs, and helicopters responding to put out the flames. Prevention is never mentioned. And it's infuriating that after a fire, faced with the disfigured and blackened mountains and valleys, the desperation of those who have lost everything, the suffering and destruction of animals and plants, politicians consistently make promises they don't keep, that they don't bother finding solutions. Every summer we end up with tears and damage, but along with the smoke, the attention all this pain deserves fades. Everything begins again, and the earth burns again, along with life."
