Fortunately, today's lifeguards were on duty, otherwise it could have turned into a tragedy. There was a lot of fear in Mari Ermi. A five-year-old girl was rescued by lifeguards when she was already far from shore. The little girl was playing with her lilo on the shoreline when she was quickly swept away by the current, aided by the rough sea and strong winds. Fortunately, swimmers noticed and immediately alerted the lifeguards. "Giulia Militello immediately jumped into the sea and quickly reached the girl, who luckily was just offshore," explained Marco Cruciani, head of lifeguards along the Sinis coast. "Then the happy ending: the little girl was able to hug her father again, who, just as his daughter was swept away by the current, was unable to intervene due to a foot problem." Also today, however, toward Porto Suedda, another lifeguard, Roberto Tommasi, Cruciani explains, reached two five-year-old children who were out on their boards with his paddle board. It was a preventative intervention. The little ones were told to return to shore immediately given their distance from the shoreline."

Meanwhile, in the Sinis area, the issue of marine safety is once again a pressing one. Lifeguards will be present only on weekends for the entire month of July. This is because the resources allocated by the Region to the Municipality of Cabras are insufficient to cover the coastal service every day throughout the summer. In fact, only from August 1st will lifeguards be available daily until the 31st in Mari Ermi, Maimoni, San Giovanni di Sinis, and Is Arutas.

Starting September 1st, the service will once again be weekend-only. This season, too, two lifelines will be in place at the beach of San Giovanni di Sinis: two handholds mounted on floats and weights that act as safety lines in case of difficulty at sea. But there's also something new: "For the first time," concludes Cruciani, "lifeguards will also have boards at their disposal."
