Sardinian academia and healthcare are mourning. Professor Stefano de Virgiliis, former head of the historic Macciotta Pediatric Clinic, director of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Cagliari, and a longtime member of the Academic Senate, passed away yesterday.

He leaves behind his wife, Pinella, and children, Federico, Valentina, and Domenico. The family has received numerous messages of condolence. An influential figure, for years, de Virgiliis was a point of reference for healthcare in the capital and across the island. He had been retired for many years.

"I knew him as a student," recalls Giovanni Ottonello, head of neonatal pathology and nursery school at the Policlinico. "He was a brilliant, highly knowledgeable, and very human person, who had a particularly empathetic relationship with children."

The funeral will take place today at 3:30 pm in the parish of the Santissimo Crocifisso in Genneruxi.
