He passed away quietly, with the extraordinary and composed discretion that characterized an entire life spent away from the spotlight and entirely devoted to the well-being of his patients. The sudden passing of Bruno Massidda, who passed away at the age of 84, leaves an immeasurable void in the world of healthcare.
An internationally renowned oncologist, Massidda pioneered the fight against cancer in Sardinia, establishing medical oncology on the island in the 1970s alongside his colleagues Pellegrini and Mascia. Born in 1942, he was the son of microbiologist Antonio Massidda, a longtime collaborator of Professor Giuseppe Brotzu. After graduating from Cagliari in 1966, he chose to dedicate his life to a then-unexplored field on the island, creating his clinical and organizational masterpiece with the establishment of the Cagliari Oncology Hospital, alongside Professors Pellegrini, Massenti, and Tarquini.
His connection with his native Monserrato was strengthened in 2000 with the opening of the department at the "Duilio Casula" University Hospital, led by Dr. Teresa Ionta, his longtime collaborator for over forty years. Under his guidance as a full professor, the vast majority of Sardinian oncologists were trained. Author of hundreds of scientific publications, he combined the high value of science with extraordinary ethics, so much so that he never engaged in private practice to avoid receiving payments from patients.
"This is a huge loss for everyone. It's very difficult for me to cope with this moment, we were bound by a deep friendship," says Dr. Teresa Ionta, moved. "Bruno was an exceptional man with his colleagues and patients, passionate about his discipline. He didn't like being in the spotlight unless it was for the benefit of his patients, but never to demonstrate his worth. He was a person of rare humility, who contributed to the healing of so many people."
The news shocked the community and institutions. His brother Piergiorgio Massidda, Councilor for Urban Planning for the Municipality of Monserrato, remembers him fondly: "My brother was a great man and a great oncologist. He dedicated his entire life to medicine and saving countless lives." Childless, Massidda had poured his paternal love and passion for art into his nephews Antonio and Mauro: " A moral and professional example for us, he gave us love like a father. He always had a suggestion to solve any problem and help us with life's difficult choices." Sardinia loses one of its best sons, a scientist who cared for the bodies without ever forgetting the souls and dignity of his patients.
