Dumped in the Platamona pine forest as if they posed no threat to the health of the area, piles of asbestos cement were uprooted from the roofs of who knows what structures and abandoned among the vegetation. This environmental disaster is located just meters from the road, at the Terzo Pettine di Platamona, along the Sorso coast. Several landfills of asbestos cement material are scattered among the trees, and among them is other waste of all sorts, which, along with hazardous waste, are ruining a green space in one of the most ecologically valuable areas. Fiber cement sheets risk releasing asbestos residues into the environment, the first to pay the price in terms of pollution. At least for now. Carcinogenic substances, highly hazardous to human health, a material that requires special removal and disposal procedures. "Criminal acts, committed by those who neglect or, worse, ignore them, and damage the delicate environmental system of a place that should be protected with strict regulations," are the comments of residents who use the area. The scene presented to regular visitors to the pine forest is disarming: a mixture of shock and anger toward those who committed what amounts to a criminal offense. The Sorso municipal administration has been notified.
