USB Sanità has sent an official request to Brotzu's general manager, Maurizio Marcias, to launch an "urgent" internal investigation into the organizational issues reported by patients at the Cagliari Oncology Center.
"A patient with myelofibrosis reported excessively long waits for transfusion therapies already available, as well as queue management perceived as non-transparent and inconsistent. The same patient allegedly forwent a transfusion deemed necessary as a form of protest and denunciation of the situation," the USB writes.
Out of a sense of responsibility, union representative Gianfranco Angioni stated, "we have requested an internal investigation because we believe it is essential to fully clarify the reports we have received and intervene promptly where organizational issues arise."
The issues are not new: "We've been highlighting them for years. One of our main demands is strengthening staffing, a prerequisite for ensuring continuity of care, reducing waiting times, and protecting both patients and healthcare workers. Furthermore, support from the local community and institutions is essential, because public healthcare can only be defended and strengthened through shared commitment."
USB Sanità emphasizes that "the professionalism of doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers, who work every day with competence and dedication in a highly intensive care setting, is not being questioned . However, putting the health of the most vulnerable patients at risk and placing a further burden on healthcare personnel."
