He was about to board a flight to Spain with over €60,000 in cash hidden in his hand luggage . He was stopped by officials from the Cagliari Customs Office and the Guardia di Finanza during checks in the departures area of Elmas airport.
When asked about the currency he was carrying, the passenger—a man of Sardinian origin—reported he was carrying only a thousand euros. A thorough inspection, however, revealed the substantial sum.
Under current regulations, both for movements into or out of the European Union and for movements into or out of Italy, a specific declaration must be submitted to the nearest border customs office. Failure to do so results in the seizure of a portion of the funds as collateral for the fine. In this specific case, €37,240 was seized.
This is not an isolated incident: in recent months, over 130,000 euros of undeclared goods have been discovered at the Cagliari airport , with the resulting fines imposed on those responsible.
