Polls are open until 3pm in Sardinia, where the citizens of 148 municipalities are called to elect mayors and renew municipal councils .
As of 11pm yesterday, Sunday 7 June, the turnout was 46.45%, an increase compared to the last municipal elections, when it stopped at 44.2% .
Analyzing the data by province, the highest turnout was recorded in Sulcis (54.94%), ahead of Nuoro and Gallura, with 54.47% and 53.71%, respectively . Ogliastra also exceeded 50% (50.84%). Then came Oristano (49.57%), Sassari (49.48%), and Medio Campidano (46.76%). Cagliari came in last, with turnout below 40%, at 39.83% . In all provinces, except Ogliastra, where there was a very slight decline, turnout increased compared to the last election.
The most anticipated contest is in Quartu, but the spotlight is also on Sestu, Sanluri, Tempio, and Porto Torres, all towns with over 100,000 inhabitants where a runoff election is scheduled for June 21st and 22nd if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote . Indeed, even though Sanluri and Tempio have populations of less than 15,000, as provincial capitals, they comply with the same rule as larger municipalities.
In Quartu, the turnout was 34.14% (it was 35.47% in the last elections), in Sanluri 48.5% (a sharp increase compared to the 31.21% of the last round), in Sestu 36.58% (the previous 29.07%), in Porto Torres 46.32% (it was 41.10% in the last administrative elections), and in Tempio 51.75% (a significant increase compared to the 40.83% of the last elections).
The territorial distribution of the municipalities voting confirms the weight of the inland areas: 37 municipalities in the Oristano area, 27 in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, 27 in the Sassari area, 20 in the Nuoro area, 13 in Gallura, 11 in the Medio Campidano area, 7 in Ogliastra, and 6 in the Sulcis Iglesiente area.
