Giovanni Carta, the elderly man who died last week in the Geriatrics Unit at Santissima Annunziata, was apparently struck down by a spontaneous cerebellar hemorrhage. This was stated in a statement by the AOU (National Hospital of Nuoro) based on initial findings from the autopsy ordered by the magistrate. Therefore, he did not fall from a stretcher. However, the family of the 91-year-old from Nuoro, who filed a complaint, is maintaining its version of events and is continuing the legal battle.
The elderly man, admitted on November 8th for a bout of vomiting and intestinal problems, developed facial bruising the next day and died on the 13th after six days. He was diagnosed with a brain hematoma and, according to the complaint, two fractured vertebrae. "The neurological picture," the AOU states in a statement, "is consistent with a spontaneous cerebellar hemorrhage, likely already present upon arrival at the hospital. This acute event can occur suddenly and is not related to recent trauma." In short, the document continues, "traumatic injuries attributable to negligent conduct by the ward staff must be ruled out."
The family
Ivan, Marco, and Monica, Carta's three children, responded on the day of their father's funeral: "The emergency medical service can certify that our father arrived at the emergency room without any injuries." Ivan responded to the AOU: "I have an eight-minute recording in which the Geriatrics ward candidly states that our father fell from the stretcher in the emergency room. I'm making the audio available to the Carabinieri."
