The process has started, now the descent begins. The domus de janas could soon become a UNESCO heritage site . The candidacy was approved today by the board of directors of the Italian commission, and includes 26 sites scattered across Sardinia, with 37 municipalities on the island involved.

The news was announced by the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano , who highlighted how the domus preserve «a historical-cultural testimony of exceptional universal value which well illustrates the richness of the Sardinian heritage».

The site, divided into its twenty-six components, identifies Sardinia between the fifth and third millennium BC , a period that goes from the Middle Neolithic to the Copper Age, characterized by the phenomena of hypogeism and megalithism: elements that come to light are of the most ancient tradition of the island linked to civil, cultural, religious and funerary functions.

Now the candidacy, promoted by the "Association for the identity and memory study center - Sardinia" and supported by the Region, by the network of municipalities of the Domus de janas and by the thirty-seven administrations, will be subjected to examination by the consultative bodies of the World Heritage Committee and then , in 2025, to the evaluation of the 1972 Convention Committee .
