Domestic abuse, stalking, and sexual violence. The Ministry of the Interior considers these crimes to be "sentinel" crimes for monitoring gender-based violence, that is, violence against women by men.

The report to the Interior Ministry Parliament was recently delivered and covers data for 2024: it is the latest dossier that provides a consolidated picture.

And while one more than zero is always a bad number, it turns out that the island ranks last in terms of the incidence of abuse: 33.42 per 100,000 inhabitants. The national average is 46.41 , and the peak rate of domestic violence is recorded in Campania, with a rate of 62.22, double that of Sardinia.

It is possible that the ratio in Sardinia is low, also due to a lower number of reports, but ministerial offices do not take this hypothesis into consideration when making an assessment and instead base their assessment on the phenomenon that has emerged.

I dati sui maltrattamenti in famiglia in Italia

Things aren't looking so good on the stalking front: for "stalking," it states, "the regions with the highest incidence of crimes committed relative to the resident population are Campania, Puglia, and Sicily; Marche, Veneto, and Lombardy, on the other hand, are the regions with the lowest rates." In Sardinia, the phenomenon is not insignificant: although the Italian average is higher (33.64 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants), on the island it stands at 31.93. In Marche, this indicator actually drops to just over 22.

The incidence of sexual violence is not at the national average, but slightly below: in Italy, it is 10.88 per 100,000 inhabitants, in Sardinia 9.01. The region with the worst figures is Emilia Romagna, with 15.06.

Across Italy, the Ministry of the Interior explains, "data relating to 'sentinel crimes' show an increase in both stalking, mistreatment against family members and cohabitants, and sexual violence, of 4%, 11%, and 6%, respectively."
