Chaos has erupted in Cagliari and Sassari over the shutdown of the WEEE waste disposal facility. This isn't normal waste, like paper or plastic, but "special" waste, meaning it's electronic and therefore subject to special treatment procedures. The shutdown was prompted by the unavailability of the designated disposal facility, a situation that's creating significant disruption, especially in larger municipalities.
In the Sardinian capital, until Wednesday, March 11th inclusive, WEEE collection at the recycling centers on Viale Sant'Elia and Via San Paolo and at the mobile recycling centers on Via Pisano and Piazza Puglia is suspended, as is home collection through the bulky waste collection service.
Specifically, until March 11th inclusive, televisions and monitors, refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, batteries and rechargeable batteries of any type and size and small household appliances such as hairdryers, telephones, personal computers, printers, blenders cannot be disposed of.
In Sassari, barring any unforeseen circumstances, the service will resume on March 9th. Until then, it is necessary to suspend collection by appointment via the toll-free number and the delivery to collection centers and mobile recycling centers of waste such as vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, irons, fryers, blenders, computers (central unit, mouse, keyboard), printers, fax machines, cell phones, VCRs, radios, etc. Other types of waste (refrigerators, cookers, washing machines, dishwashers, monitors, TVs, fluorescent tubes) will continue to be collected regularly.
