"The Region must translate the CNA's warning into commitments in the next planning period. Stable jobs, adequate wages, and services are needed. A Sardinia that is losing its working-age population risks losing productive capacity, skills, and services. The warning raised by the Research Center must become a priority for regional planning."
Thus the general secretary of Uil Sardinia Fulvia Murru on the alarm raised by CNA regarding employment on the island.
According to the analysis, by 2054, the Sardinian population between the ages of 20 and 64 could decrease from 907,600 to approximately 542,000, a 40.3% decline. In a scenario that maintains current labor market parameters, the loss would amount to 219,000 potential employees.
Particularly worrying is the forecast for young people : the 20-24 age group could decline by 54%, profoundly weakening generational turnover. These projections are influenced by the study's assumptions, which indicate the magnitude of the risk to be addressed.
"We can't wait until 2054 to intervene," the union argues. "When a young person leaves because they find only short-term contracts, few hours of work, and insufficient wages, Sardinia also loses part of its future. And when a family leaves a town because of a lack of schools, healthcare, or transportation, depopulation becomes a self-sustaining process. The positive signs of employment must be recognized."
The quality of work remains crucial: the CNA study reports a 24% incidence of part-time work, 12.4% of involuntary part-time work, and a 19% share of young people who are NEETs. "These indicators require precise answers," Murru clarifies. "Increasing employment must also mean allowing people to earn a living from their work and plan for the future."
According to Uil Sardegna, "the next regional budget must include an integrated strategy, with identifiable resources, implementation timelines, and verifiable results. Business incentives must reward stable employment, enforcement of collective agreements signed by representative organizations, safety, and training."
