The allocation of half a million euros is good, but from the Region «still no concrete action to resolve problems related to the situation of hunger and thirst that pushes specimens of Sardinian deer downstream, in search of water and food, with the risks that this entails both for the animals and for the safety of those who travel the roads of Sardinia.

This is what the Legal Intervention Group highlights in a note, where it takes note of «resolution no. 52/42 of 23 December 2024 – still not available for consultation – with which the Council has allocated 500 thousand euros to support the “experimental interventions” of the Municipalities of Pula, Guspini, Siliqua, Arbus, Guspini, Laconi to prevent ungulates from crossing the road in their respective territories with municipal».

"A few pennies", the association emphasizes, but without definitive measures. "And yet, there are now quite a few accidents involving specimens of Sardinian deer", emphasizes the Grig. Which also summarizes the road accidents that have occurred in recent months at the home of the deer:

«During the night between 14 and 15 September 2024, a Sardinian deer was hit by a car along state road no. 195 (km. 36,400), in the municipal territory of Pula (CA). The deer died, damage to the vehicle». Again: «A similar accident, at the end of August 2024, on the new SS no. 125 in the municipal territory of Castiadas (SU). And the Sardinian deer, due to hunger and thirst, are now also arriving in the countryside of Quartu Sant'Elena, on the slopes of the Sette Fratelli massif».

«The official data, communicated by the Department of Environmental Protection of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia - Nature Protection and Forestry Policies Service - continues the association - state that "in 2023 the road accidents with wild fauna for which a request for compensation was received were 46 with deer or fallow deer in the territory of the municipality of Pula, in particular along the SS 195 between km 30 and km. 42».

«Despite this – concludes the Intervention Group – it does not appear that low voltage electric fences have been set up (nor are they planned) on the hill/mountain side, nor are there any grasslands or small water reserves».

For this reason, the association is once again calling for interventions: "First of all, high and sturdy fences, also electrified at low voltage, along the main and secondary roads, the creation of grasslands and crops in clearings for wild fauna, already financed with community funds, the creation of small water reserves in woodland and scrub areas. Even simple initiatives, but with positive results, far from the stale proposal - as innovative as a nativity scene - of the plans for the culling of the Sardinian deer put forward by some parts of the hunting world".
