Since dawn today, the area between Via Repubblica and Via Stazione in Decimomannu has been the scene of a large-scale clearing operation involving the former Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian Railways) recreational club, located just steps from the modern Piazza Giotto. This is a long-awaited operation for residents, who have now reached the end of their tether due to the deterioration that has persisted for months.
The operation
The raid began at 6:00 a.m. The Decimomannu Municipal Police, who had been monitoring the building for some time, coordinated the delicate process of evicting the occupants. To ensure the safety of everyone involved, the magistrate ordered an ambulance from the 118 SOS Decimomannu emergency service to be on site, ready to intervene if necessary. Carabinieri officers from the local station are also on site, supervising the public order operations.
An unsustainable coexistence
The building, once a recreational hub, had become an illegal makeshift shelter for several families, including some with minors. The ground floor of the building had already been cleared and walled up in a previous intervention, but the occupation had moved to the first floor, continuing to cause significant disruption to the neighborhood.
Exasperated residents in the area had repeatedly reported an unbearable situation: late-night parties, loud noises, violent arguments, and even fireworks, amidst severely deteriorating hygiene and infrastructure.
The future of the area
In addition to law enforcement, the Social Services of the Municipality of Decimomannu intervened at the eviction site, assessing the situation of the families involved—particularly those of minors—to ensure they receive the necessary assistance at this critical time.
Technicians from the municipal technology services and representatives of the Italian State Railways, the property's owner, also joined the operation. The authorities' goal is to secure the entire building, preventing further intrusions and restoring decorum and tranquility to a strategic corner of the town.
