A life-saving intervention this morning by the India nursing ambulance in Decimomannu, where a fourteen-year-old boy suffered anaphylactic shock after taking a drug.

The alarm was raised around 8:30 a.m., when the Cagliari emergency call center was alerted by the mother of the young man who had felt ill after taking a medication. From the description provided to the emergency call center operator, it immediately became clear that it could be a case of anaphylaxis , a severe, systemic allergic reaction that comes on suddenly and can lead to death within minutes.

The dispatcher dispatched the Decimomannu advanced nursing unit , which arrived within minutes. The boy was suffering from widespread edema, difficulty breathing, and a skin rash. These symptoms prompted the nurse, after consulting the dispatch doctor, to administer intramuscular epinephrine, "as per the advanced algorithm," with rapid relief for the young man , who was then taken to a city hospital for further evaluation.

"Our nurses on the India vehicles are the eyes and arms of the emergency medical specialist at the dispatch center ," emphasizes Daniele Barillari, director of the Cagliari 118 emergency service. "All the nurses who work on board our vehicles have completed advanced training and have access to algorithms shared with the emergency medical personnel at the dispatch center," Barillari emphasizes. "Whenever the need arises , the nurse works closely with the anesthesia and resuscitation specialist or emergency medicine specialist on call at the 118 dispatch center."
