Still many victims: the island was the last to be attacked by the pandemic but it will also be the last to leave the tunnel

In the last seven days in Sardinia there have been 55 deaths from the coronavirus, nine only yesterday. In all of Italy, on the other hand, there is a decrease in the curve of infections and victims, but it is not the first time that on the Island, effects that have been seen earlier elsewhere have occurred with a certain delay, as explained by Giovanni Sotgiu, epidemiologist: "When the wave has restarted in the North East, we were in a situation of relative tranquility, so much so that we were the last to change color bands. A condition that some had tried to attribute to the more virtuous behavior of the Sardinians, but obviously this was not the case ".
Insularity is at the basis of this time lag: "The outbreaks exploded in the eastern part of the country, due to close contacts and connections with other territories, then they also arrived in Sardinia, first Delta then Omicron, with the increase incidence, followed by the burden on health services, and finally deaths. In short, we are in the queue, we too will have a decrease. When? We cannot say for sure ”.
There are still many victims on the island but, adds Sotgiu, “they are not in greater numbers than in other parts of Italy and the world. Wherever there has been a surge in cases, there has been high mortality. Now there has been the narration that the latter was a mild form, in fact - as also reported by the New England Journal of Medicine - the severity of Omicron is comparable to that of Delta. But those vaccinated with three doses were helped by immune protection ”.
The fear is however “that there is a perception that we are now out of it”.
