Thirty notices of conclusion of investigations against a large criminal group dedicated to drug trafficking in Sardinia, consisting of 22 men and 8 women of various nationalities, were issued by the Cagliari District Prosecutor's Office following the "Caballero" investigation, conducted by the Alghero Police Station since 2019.

According to the investigation, the drugs came mainly from Spain and a total of 34 charges were filed, ranging from conspiracy to traffick narcotics, to simple trafficking, possession, or dealing, to aiding and abetting.

During the operation, nine couriers were arrested in flagrante delicto, at different times, and over 5.5 kg of cocaine and 200 kg of cannabis, divided into 2,111 plants, were seized.

"With a few exceptions," investigators explain, "the organization's established modus operandi was to transport the illicit substance from Spain, using couriers who ingested a variable quantity (from 45 to 70) of "eggs," conveniently packaged in plastic and containing approximately 13 to 15 grams of cocaine each. These eggs were ingested to avoid security checks at Spanish and Italian ports and airports during transportation."

Once in Sardinia, investigators continue, "the courier on duty, safely housed in a hotel or B&B, often booked by another member of the organization, would dispose of the ovules naturally, which he would then deliver to another member of the organization , who would then distribute the illicit substance, sometimes through Sardinian accomplices, throughout the region. The local accomplices also trafficked marijuana from other sources, mostly from the island. These important findings then allowed investigators to identify other members of the criminal organization who served as suppliers, intermediaries, and recipients of the illicit substance transported or possessed by the arrested individuals."
