Ban on climbing activities in Tavolara. The mayor of Olbia Settimo Nizzi decided this with an ad hoc ordinance.

"Too many times we have witnessed sports activities on Tavolara carried out by unprepared people and with inadequate equipment . The result has been a significant number of accidents that have put the lives of hikers in serious danger . The beauty of the places and the breathtaking panorama that can be enjoyed from the summit of the island, invite even individuals without the necessary experience and psycho-physical ability to reach the summit", reads a note released by the Municipality.

"It is our precise duty to protect the safety of people . After a careful analysis of the danger of the place and the accidents that have occurred, we have decided to adopt the ordinance that prohibits this type of activity in Tavolara, except for those who have the qualification of mountain guide and the specialization in sport climbing, exclusively for study and scientific purposes. The measure was also adopted in order to protect our naturalistic and cultural heritage", says Mayor Nizzi, explaining the reasons behind the ordinance.

The administration has carefully assessed the risks. The landslide danger conditions detectable in Tavolara have been studied: high (Hg3) and very high (Hg4) levels of danger emerge on all slopes. The analyses of the PAI maps, as approved by the Sardinia Region and published in BURAS n.1 of 2 January 2025, also highlight a widespread presence of active landslides on the island, and, more generally, a widespread susceptibility to landslide phenomena.

"The latest accident in chronological order occurred a few days ago, on May 3, when a hiker suffered an injury while walking along the "Ferrata degli Angeli" - continues Nizzi -. Due to the particular conformation of the place, impervious and at a high altitude, the rescue operations involved 14 technicians from the Alpine rescue stations of Olbia, Sassari and Nuoro, a patrol boat from the Port Authority, and a medical team that arrived with the Areus helicopter rescue based in Alghero . If we consider that in the summer there will be a large increase in tourist presence, including Sunday hikers, the critical issues regarding rescue operations would worsen and the people to be helped could find themselves in greater difficulty".
