The baby bonus implemented in Sardinia in 2022 for families with children residing in municipalities with fewer than 3,000 inhabitants (€600 for the first child and €400 for each subsequent child) had a significant impact on fertility . The effect was equivalent to an average increase of just over 0.3 births per month, with an annual increase of approximately 3.6 births.

This is what INPS highlights in an in-depth analysis of its annual report , explaining that, «since the average monthly number of births in the municipalities treated in the post-intervention period is equal to 1.44, the estimated effect corresponds to an increase in births of approximately 21%» .

At the same time, however, in addition to the positive effects on fertility, the policy may have had significant consequences on the labor market . Mothers who had another child and benefited from the policy showed a significantly lower probability of being employed in the private or public sector in the period 2022-2024. The estimated reduction is approximately 11 percentage points compared to the control group .

"This is a significant effect, considering that the probability of employment in the control group is approximately 44%. In relative terms, this corresponds to a decrease of approximately 25% in the probability of being employed," INPS emphasizes.
