A profound inner malaise bordering on true psychosis. The boundaries are always those of a deep-rooted discomfort, a loss of touch with reality that would have led Monica Vinci to take the life of her daughter Chiara Carta .

Yesterday, doctors, called to testify before the Cagliari Assize Court, confirmed the difficulties encountered by the 54-year-old, even before that tragic February 18, 2023, when she stabbed her daughter with a knife in her home in Silì.

Prosecutor Valerio Bagattini called several doctors who had treated the woman, now a resident of the Residence for the Execution of Security Measures (REMS) in Capoterra. Piergiorgio Salis, former head of the psychiatry department at San Martino Hospital in Oristano, was interviewed. Salis had treated her for about a year and a half after her initial hospitalization. During that period, she suffered a severe psychotic attack with mystical delusions, confirming that her illness had been going on for some time.

Then came Professor Bernardo Carpiniello, a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy, who examined Monica Vinci when she requested the appointment of a support administrator. He maintained that at the time, she was fully competent to act as a parent, but had also recommended regular check-ups and constant monitoring given her previous experiences.

Finally, Giovanni Guiso, director of the Psychiatry Department at San Martino, answered questions from the prosecutor, the defense (with lawyer Gianluca Aste ), and the civil party (with Anna Paola Putzu , representing Piero Carta, Chiara's father). The head physician stated that he met Monica Vinci three years ago, when he took her in after the murder and suicide attempt. She remained hospitalized for a long time and remained catatonic throughout, almost completely unresponsive or inactive with her surroundings. Following the preliminary investigation, the case returns to court on July 8th for oral argument.
