Charity disembarks from cruise ships. It's not just tourism and the large numbers associated with maritime traffic. Even in the height of the summer season, the Sardinian ports continue to discreetly donate food to volunteers working to fight poverty. This morning, at the port of Cagliari, approximately 80 kilos of food disembarked from the Costa Crociere ship Toscana for the Caritas soup kitchen . This surplus food, carefully packaged, has been donated by the cruise company, with the support of the AdSP del Mare di Sardegna, to local organizations for several years, providing both significant support for the daily volunteer work and a significant reduction in food waste.
In support of the company's charitable work, this morning, at the Rinascita pier were Valeria Mangiarotti, marketing manager of the Port of Sardinia (AdSP), Valentina Vacquer, administrative director of the Sardinian Food Bank, representatives of the Cagliari Cruise Port, Don Marco Lai, director of Caritas, and Marco Pilleri, president of the Mensa del Viandante.
It is precisely for these two associations that Costa Crociere , with a schedule that began last August 4th and will continue until November 3rd, will alternate the distribution of meals for each of the 14 dockings in Tuscany.
These tons of food are in addition to those regularly donated by Corsica Sardinia Ferries in Golfo Aranci and Moby in Olbia, respectively to the Gallura Diocesan Caritas and the Company of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, as part of the " Solidarity Food Supply " project. This initiative, also strongly supported by the Port Authority, has a high human and social value and aims to expand the activity to all its ports, involving new companies and different types of vessels.
"The solidarity network between the Port System Authority, shipping companies, and volunteers represents one of the most important values that ports can express for the benefit of the local community," explains Domenico Bagalà, president of the AdSP del Mare di Sardegna . "The donation of surplus food in Cagliari and the solidarity galley in Olbia and Golfo Aranci represent concrete gestures that combine sustainability, social inclusion, and attention to the most vulnerable sections of society. It's a virtuous model that we will continue to strongly and tirelessly promote and support."
