Where there were illegal dumps, now there are signs indicating that the cleanup has taken place and that the area is now under video surveillance: the fight against incivility conducted by the Municipality is starting to bear fruit. Dozens of citizens sanctioned with fines of thousands of euros, several criminal complaints: the iron fist used by the local police command was fundamental in cracking down on waste abandonment.
"The project, funded by the Region with 80,000 euros, is proving to be truly useful in solving the problem of illegal landfills," explains Mayor Beniamino Garau. " In the last year, dozens of sites targeted by uncivilized people have been reclaimed , areas of the territory now protected by mobile cameras. The greatest difficulties are recorded in the areas of Macchiareddu, where the territories of Capoterra, Uta, Cagliari and Assemini join together and establishing who should intervene becomes complicated."
When cameras aren't enough, local police officers are there to name the uncivilized, managing to find documents and sensitive data in abandoned garbage bags. " Bills, school notebooks and other documents containing names and addresses, it's their naivety that gets those who dirty our countryside into trouble ," says Garau. "Often it's not these people who abandon waste, but others who are in charge of emptying cellars or cleaning closets, which is why it's a duty to always ask for a receipt for disposal at authorized centers."
Roberta Maxia, commander of the local police, confirms that the phenomenon of the wild bag is in sharp decline: « We have imposed fines that reach up to 6,000 euros . There has been no shortage of criminal complaints for those who have abandoned dangerous waste in the countryside. If the problem of illegal landfills is under control today it is because the control of the territory represents an important deterrent and the sanctions have become harsher».
From the minority benches, councilor Silvano Corda, who has always been on the lookout for illegal dumps in the area, confirms that he receives fewer reports than in the past: "The result is due to the battle that the Municipality has been waging for several years, already during the Dessì administration the attention to this problem was maximum. The role of mobile cameras is important, but more staff would be needed to view the images and identify those who persist in defacing our territory".
