Allowing citizens to regularize their tax debts, while simultaneously allowing municipal coffers to recover significant resources that have long been held in doubtful debts: the Municipality is ready to participate in the debt relief program, which will be open to over three thousand citizens. Recovering what is owed quickly: this is the goal of the municipal administration, determined to clear the tax bills filed with the Revenue Agency between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2023, thanks to the provision included in the Budget Law approved by the Government.
"Over the past two years, we've managed to recover nearly €10 million in municipal taxes thanks to the diligent work of our offices," explains Mayor Beniamino Garau. "With the tax relief program, we hope to achieve tax peace for thousands of residents who, for one reason or another, have been unable to pay their TARI, TASI, IMU, and water bills. No penalties, interest, or late payments, and the ability to defer payments: the benefits for taxpayers will be enormous; compliance will end any disputes over unpaid taxes."
The Municipality is also considering other tools to help taxpayers stay on top of their taxes. "We will create an app that will allow citizens to check if their taxes are paid, identify any discrepancies, and find out when their taxes are due," Garau explains. "We are gradually reorganizing the municipal coffers. We were very pleased to recently approve the budget on time and have already been able to allocate resources to the spending budget."
Franco Magi, president of the City Council, was also satisfied : "Collecting taxes is always ungenerous but necessary. This administration has faced a historical record of uncollected taxes from 2008 to today. By joining the tax scrapping program, it is pursuing tax peace with its citizens."
Former mayor Francesco Dessì also supports the idea of scrapping taxes: "Giving citizens the opportunity to regularize their situation is a positive thing, and it can also release significant resources that have been set aside for a long time into the municipal coffers."
Efisio De Muru, leader of the Democratic Party, also expressed his support: "The possibility of allowing those who have fallen behind on their payments to catch up is a good thing. Furthermore, new resources will be found to invest in services, education, and culture. But it would also be right to find ways to reward taxpayers who have always paid."
