Almost five hundred residents lost from 2017 to 2024 , the inability to attract young couples as had happened until the beginning of the 2000s: Capoterra continues to deal with a worrying demographic decline that has brought the number of inhabitants down to 24,300 .

Gone are the days when, thanks to the creation of new residential areas, Capoterra experienced a real demographic boom: after twenty years, politicians are wondering how to stop this negative trend and make the area attractive for young families again. The former mayor, Francesco Dessì, remembers the years when 280 trees were planted each year to celebrate each newborn: " There are more deaths than births, this is a fact, but there are also residents of the seaside areas, now elderly, who prefer to return to Cagliari , where they come from, to have more services. There is no shortage of families who move to the capital because, as they grow, their children have needs that our transport system is not always able to satisfy: one of the main problems remains the connection with the city, a mockery if you think that we are one of the closest hinterland centers. An intermodal bus sorting center on our coast and the light metro could do a lot".

Efisio De Muru, leader of the Democratic Party, explains how strengthening welfare can reverse the negative trend in births: "Finding houses to rent in Capoterra, as in the rest of the towns around Cagliari, is increasingly complicated. With mortgages at prohibitive rates and atypical work contracts for under-40s, it is increasingly difficult to buy a house, which is why, to bring young families closer, it is necessary to provide services that not everyone can guarantee : full-time schools go exactly in this direction. Capoterra can become an excellence, the proximity to Cagliari, the Gutturu mannu park and its coast, with the opportunities that the completion of the new road will offer, are ingredients that can relaunch our territory".

New schools and nurseries, social housing and a restyling of the municipal urban plan for the creation of new residential areas: the mayor, Beniamino Garau, explains how the results of the work carried out today by his administration will be seen within five years: « In this period of time we have estimated that the population will exceed 25 thousand inhabitants, we aim to become one of the most important centers of the metropolitan city . There are fewer births, it is true, but we are building nurseries, canteens and schools to ensure that families from outside choose to move to us. Furthermore, it is essential to give people the opportunity to build their own home, it will no longer happen that a development plan stagnates for ten years on the desks of the Municipality before it gets the green light. We are also certain that the creation of new commercial areas and the jobs that they will consequently bring will give new life to Capoterra ».
