Eight years after the events, the Tempio Pausania Court has issued a sensational ruling regarding the highly controversial disposal of sludge from sewage treatment plants in Campania at the Cipnes consortium landfill in Olbia.
Judge Tommaso Andorlini acquitted , with the broadest possible terms, former president of Cipnes, Mario Gattu, and the director responsible for the environmental sector of the industrial consortium, Gianni Maurelli. The two, represented by lawyer Marzio Altana, were accused of violating the Integrated Environmental Authorization (AIA) requirements by disposing of sewage sludge from plants in the Naples and Caserta areas to Spiritu Santu, the consortium's landfill. In 2018, the plant was seized, and there were also allegations of infiltration by organized crime groups from the Caserta area. Investigations and the trial revealed further, very serious, facts.
The disposal of highly polluting waste (hydrocarbons and heavy metals) was denied by the very individuals who performed the analyses. Arpas operators confirmed that they had used completely incorrect coefficients, which dramatically increased the quantities of pollutants.
The purification plants from which the sludge came were not managed by companies controlled by the Camorra, but had instead been placed under special administration and the deliveries (after years of dumping in the open countryside in the Caserta area) were regulated by contracts with Cipnes.
Lastly, the placement of the sludge in the landfill was based on instructions from judicial police personnel. Attorney Marzio Altana obtained an acquittal because the charges were not substantiated.
