Brawls, drug dealing, robberies. Violence is almost daily. A crackdown is falling on Piazza del Carmine and surrounding areas in Cagliari: a red zone against petty crime has been established.

The Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety, meeting this morning at the Prefecture, adopted a series of experimental measures that will remain in effect for 60 days. High-impact operations will be implemented, supported by joint patrols. Furthermore, a ban on loitering and the removal of "specific individuals with prior convictions for predatory, personal, and drug-related crimes , who engage in aggressive, threatening, and persistently disruptive behavior, posing a concrete threat to public safety, will be imposed, hindering the full and unrestricted use" of the premises.

The affected roads are:

  • Carmine Square;
  • Via Sassari, up to the corner with Via Mameli;
  • Maddalena Street;
  • Malta Street;
  • Crispi Street;
  • Malta Street;
  • Viale Trieste, up to Via Isola di Tavolara.

The meeting was attended by Mayor Massimo Zedda, Police Commissioner Rosanna Lavezzaro, the commander of the Cagliari Carabinieri operational unit , Daniele Credidio , and the provincial commander of the Guardia di Finanza, Danilo Massimo Cardone.

La riunione in Prefettura

"This measure," emphasized Prefect Giuseppe Castaldo, "provides police officers with a tool that will be added, for 60 days and in certain clearly defined areas, to those already in use, ensuring an even more effective and stringent response to situations that pose greater security challenges. Efforts remain high in all other areas of the city, as part of the planning of extraordinary territorial control services and high-impact operations."

Zedda added: "I thank the prefect and law enforcement for their support and increased enforcement following these incidents, with a view to ensuring greater peace of mind for residents."
