Suckling pig for Christmas or New Year's Eve in Cagliari? Twenty euros a kilo, if you're lucky. But now the (extra)ordinary price is set at twenty-two per kilogram. A standard-sized half of a suckling pig, which certainly won't feed a table of more than five people, therefore costs over seventy euros. This is the price at the San Benedetto market, in its temporary version in Piazza Nazzari. But the trend is similar at numerous butcher shops in the capital.

Gone are the days when Sardinian roast meat sold for 12-13 euros per kilogram: the internet is still full of similar offers, but they date back to just five months ago.

There are still a few online businesses these days (one in Medio Campidano) selling suckling pigs for 18.90 a kilo. It's certainly not a freebie, but at this point it seems like a bargain.

Anyone who has friends (or acquaintances, or friends of friends) who are farmers should have probably taken action sooner: there seems to be no trace of low-cost piglets for sale these holidays.

And lamb? It costs around 19 euros a kilo, again in the capital. Here too: a hefty price tag for those who respect tradition and appreciate meat.
